Program Description:

This program provides fellowships to students of superior academic ability—selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral and Master of Fine Arts level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences.

Subject to the availability of funds, a fellow receives the Javits fellowship annually for up to the lesser of 48 months or the completion of their degree. The fellowship consists of an institutional payment (accepted by the institution of higher education in lieu of all tuition and fees for the fellow) and a stipend (based on the fellow's financial need as determined by the measurements of the Federal Student Assistance Processing System. Typically the maximum stipend is $30,000 and the institutional payment is $13,755.

Eligibility:
  • US citizen/US national
  • Will be entering a doctoral program in the academic year in which you are applying, and/or who, at the time of application, have not yet completed their first full year of study in the doctoral program for which they are seeking support;
  • will be entering a Master of Fine Arts program where the master’s is the terminal highest degree awarded in the selected field of study.
